Directions to 47 Lake St. in Arlington, MA (zip 02474): (781-646-9289 (for a human), 781-646-9269 (for answering machine or fax)) By subway - Take the Red Line to the North/West end at Alewife Station. The #79 bus to Arlington Heights is the simplest (but not the fastest) way to complete the trip. See the "bus" directions, below. Alternately, you can switch from subway to bus at either the Harvard or Porter stops on the Red Line. Again, to go from there, see the "bus" directions, below. Otherwise, if you've managed to find your way out of Alewife Station on the side where all the cars drive in and out, you should turn 90 degrees to the right and walk pretty much straight for about 12 to 15 minutes (along the Minuteman Trail), at which point you will find a street across your path (Lake Street). Turn right again, and walk a block or two (depending on which "straight" path you took) to my family's house. By bus - The #77 bus from Harvard Square to Arlington Heights starts underground in Harvard Square, on the upper level. You can also pick it up in Porter Square. The bus travels along Massachusetts Avenue for the whole length of its route. Notable landmarks will be: Porter Square (with a big red moving sculpture high overhead and on the right); a long, straight, mundane stretch through North Cambridge; the Arlington border (gas station on the near right corner, wooden sign saying "Arlington" on median strip, major cross-road, street narrows temporarily) (this is where the #77 and #79 bus routes become identical (see "subway", above)). After the border, you will see two intersections with traffic lights on a straight section of road. If the road bends again, you've gone too far. The second traffic light is where you want to get off. The bus stop is on the far side of the intersection and the marquee for the Capitol Theater is just opposite the bus stop, on your left. This is the "Lake Street" bus stop, and the street going away from Mass. Ave. on the left (by the Capitol Theater) is Lake Street. The bus driver should recognize the Lake Street stop by name. (Lots of people get off there.) Walk down lake street 2 or 3 blocks (depending on which side of the street) and you will see the Hardy Elementary School on your left, and my family's house on a corner to the right (by the fire hydrant). The door on the left, with the "47" next to it, is ours. ABBREVIATED VERSION (bus) - Take the #77 bus from Harvard or Porter, or the #79 bus from Alewife, to the "Lake Street" stop. Walk up Lake St. to #47. By car (From Mass Ave) - Drive up (or down) Mass Ave to Lake St. (See the "bus" directions, above.) The Lake Street intersection is near address #200 on Mass Ave (They start the numbering again at the Arlington border) and has a traffic light. See the end of the "bus" directions for the location of the house. If you reach the traffic light that is down Lake Street, you've gone 1 block too far. By car (From Route 2) - Get off at the Lake Street exit, which is between the east end of the highway and the Arlington Center exit. Take Lake St (you have no choice) into Arlington (a right turn off either ramp). There is only one traffic light between the ends of Lake Street. Our house (#47) is at the corner on the left, one block after the traffic light (across from a red-brick school). Parking is available on the side street (Newcomb St). Parking on Lake Street is legal, but not recommended. Addition parking is available on other side streets and maybe in the parking lot behind the school. (On-street cars need to be moved by 2am or they may be ticketed.)
