| Background |
I'm originally from Exton, Pennsylvania and went to Downingtown High School. Where the heck is that? Near West Chester, PA, but you probably don't know where that is either. Well, they're both near the Valley Forge/Philadelphia area. Check out a map if you really care... :-)

My other major interest in computer science revolves around system design and development. I took several classes exploring related topics and fields, and during several of my internships at DEC CRL, I got experience in system design-related projects. One summer my research involved designing and developing technology to allow users to harness speech recognition through the World Wide Web, and one by-product of this research resulted in my designing and implementing the prototype of the DIGITAL Voice Plugin (check it out -- it's fun! =).
During this last semester at MIT, I was also a teaching assistant for the undergrad class in software engineering. Needless to say, this turned out to be a pretty cool experience =).
As an undergrad, I worked at Nissan Cambridge Basic Research, doing a UROP. I mainly helped in writing extensions to a car simulator, running experiments in human vision and cognitive studies, and analyzing data from these experiments. I also set up a webserver a couple years ago -- click above to check it out. During the spring semester of my Senior year, I worked there to fulfill my last graduation requirement, the institute lab, by doing independent research in trying to assess the mental workload of drivers in a non-intrusive manner. Perhaps I'll add a link to my final research paper/report for that project sometime.
(Here's a really geeky
picture of me wearing our eye-tracker.)
.
I'm also a member of SIPB, and as an undergrad I spent some of my time helping out there, mainly with Linux related stuff, as well as the MIT Events Listings with Matthew, though by the time I was a Senior and especially a graduate student, I did not have time to be active in that organization.

I also play some pick-up ice-hockey, and I ski when I get a chance (which is not very often). I'm not very good at either, but I do have a lot of fun doing them. I'm also really into racquetball, but unfortunately, MIT doesn't have any racquetball courts -- only squash courts. I've tried playing squash, and I enjoyed it, but it's just not the same (besides, I have two racquetball racquets and *no* squash racquets :-) Maybe when I enter the real world (gah!) I'll find some racquetball courts...
Continuing with the hockey theme, I'm an avid fan of the sport and closely follow my hometown team, the Philadelphia Flyers. I've also followed the Bruins and soon will follow the San Jose Sharks and will cheer for them, unless of course they're playing against the Flyers =). As a warning, I've been told that I turn into a different person when I'm at a hockey game ;-).
I like listening to various groups, but if you pass by my room, chances are you'll hear Depeche Mode, the Cure, INXS, Erasure, REM, TMBG, U2, NIN, Alanis, Moxy Fruvous, Natalie Merchant, the Cranberries, Les Mis blasting.
I'm also trying to get back into writing. I used to write a lot of poetry, but that just doesn't happen anymore. Maybe I'll try some short stories, like my friends have been telling me, sometime in the aforementioned copious free time ;-)...
