John WARD, b. ca. 1669, d. 1707 in the British garrison at Gibraltar, bur. there 17 Dec 1707 aged 38. Served with Admiral Sir George Rooke and Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt in the British capture of Gibraltar, Jul 1704. Said to have been "in the military service" (ref. 8a) and to have "borne arms with honour and died in the British service" (ref. 14), but described as a merchant at his burial in 1707. [ref. 2a,3,8a,12,14]

A merchant in Spain and for many years the paymaster of the British garrison at Gibraltar. Later a merchant in London and a director of the East India Docks there, residing for "many years" at Highbury Place. Settled in England in 1782. His monument at Ealing has this epitaph: "He was a man not so much distinguished for his length of days as in employments of labour and trust, for perseverance unremitting, and for honour unblemished." [ref. 1,3,8a,12,14]

    2. George WARD, b. ca 1751, m. Mary WOODFALL (daughter of Henry Sampson WOODFALL, d. Nov 1813, bur. at Cowes, Isle of Wight), d. 18 Feb 1829 at his mansion, Northwood House, Northwood, near West Cowes, in his 78th year. A "very eminent Spanish and Mediterranean merchant in the city of London" who "amassed a princely fortune" (ref. 8a). Of Soho Square, London, but in 1793, began buying land in Northwood; by 1858, the family was said to own four-fifths of the parish. In 1820, with partner William FITZHUGH, established the Isle of Wight Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the first steamer service between Cowes and Southampton and a predecessor of the Red Funnel ferry service, which still operates. [ref. 2g,2k,3,7,8a,12]
