In 1851, a coal carrier, living in an alms house at Gwaelod-y-Garth, Pentyrch, with his wife Rachel and children John and Jane. In 1861, a general laborer, living in an alms house at Garth, Pentyrch, with his wife Rachel. [ref. 1b,1c]

In 1861, a coal miner, living at Kenfig Hill, Glamorgan, with his wife Alice and their children Mary Jane and David. In 1871, a collier, living at Kenfig Hill with his wife Alice and their children Thomas, Jane, Ann, Benjamin, Alice, and Evan. Kenfig Hill was "a populous hamlet, partly in the parish of Pyle but principally in the parish of Tythegston" (Slater's Commercial Directory, 1880), and this may explain the inconsistency in the birthplaces reported for John's children. (John and family lived in the Tythegston part in 1861 and the Pyle part in 1871.)
