At their marriage in 1831, Evan and Rachel were both of Llantwit Fardre. In 1841, a dipper, living at Tay Bach, Pentyrch, with his wife Rachel, their children John and Jane, and Thomas EVANS (a collier, relationship unknown, b. ca. 1761 in Glamorgan). In 1851, a coal carrier, living in an alms house at Gwaelod y Garth, Pentyrch, with his wife Rachel and their children John and Jane. Kenfig Hill was "a populous hamlet, partly in the parish of Pyle but principally in the parish of Tythegston" (Slater's Commercial Directory, 1880), and this may explain the inconsistency in the birthplaces reported for John's children. (John and family lived in the Tythegston part in 1861 and the Pyle part in 1871.)
