This year's tournament will be held December 1 and 2. Please follow these links to sign up to judge or to help out with housing. Thanks!

The Invitation

The MIT Debate Team invites you to our annual tournament on December 1-2.

Debate - We will have five rounds of debate, breaking to quarterfinals. We reserve the right to change this to octos or half-octos if our reg is unusually high. (This will of course be announced before the start of the tournament if it occurs.)

Tab - Adam Groce will be running tab. It will be fast and flawless. A detailed tab policy will be posted later, but there will be nothing unexpected. Ironmen will be allowed to win in inrounds, but not allowed to break. If a team was an ironman during an inround, they will not be allowed to break even if the second person is there at the time, unless there is a very good reason why someone wasn't there for one round. Anyone not in all five rounds will be ineligible for speaker awards. Hybrids get protection from one school. Tight call policy will be unsurprising.

Judging - Michelle Zimmermann, with assistance from Ethan Bates, is working on putting together an awesome judging pool. We have a judging requirement of (N-1)/3 (rounded down). This is a very, very low requirement, so we expect you to meet it. We will be charging a $50 fee for every judge you are short of the requirement. We don't expect to have to cap the tournament, but we will impose a stricter judging requirement after we have passed 90 teams. Above 90 teams, all teams who register must meet an N/2 judging requirement, and we will break up teams from schools that don't meet that requirement if we have to.

Trophies - We have them. They are shiny and awesome, and the top ones are very big. You know you want them.

Housing - Linda Fang is arranging excellent accommodations for you all. Let us know with your prereg whether you need housing or not. If you have a friend you're staying with or something like that, that's great. It's even greater if you tell us that ahead of time so we don't have to have people waiting for you. We can house people for Thursday or Saturday night if you let us know well in advance.

Food - Zach Clifford is arranging for the standard pizza for dinner on Friday, scrumptious breakfast on Saturday morning, and a bountiful banquet of Chinese food for lunch on Saturday.

Money - We are charging $110 per team, with a $10 per team per month charge if you are late in paying. If your school is from south of New York City, Canada, or far enough away to fly, you get reg for $55.

Schedule - We will be closing registration at 4:00 and starting first round at 4:30. If you aren't here at 4:00, we'll be happy to take final registration over the phone. If you aren't here at 4:30, we'll be happy to drop you from first round.

Pre-registration - Preregistration is due Tuesday, November 28 at 11:59 PM. (As noted previously, our judging requirement makes it in your interest to tell us earlier.) Give us the usual information - team names, debater's names, novice status, seed status, and how many need housing. Send pre-registration to debate-request@mit.edu.
