La celebración de Diwali

Diwali (más propiamente Deepavali, que significa "arreglo de luces") es una de las festividades más importantes de la cultura hindú.

Por relevancia equivale a la Navidad para el Occidente cristiano. Y tiene un espíritu similar en el sentido que hay buena voluntad, alegría, ganas de dar, etc. La forma tradicional en la que se celebra (y, sorprendentemente, el evento exacto que se conmemora) varía de región en región (como muchas cosas en la India según parece). La fecha tampoco esta muy clara para Occidente, ya que depende del calendario hindú (en definitiva, depende del calendario lunar), pero es siempre a fines de Octubre/comienzos de Noviembre. En cualquier caso, la celebración implica luces, decoración, vestimentas, comida, y es un tiempo de alegría. Las celebraciones son a lo largo de varios días.

Acá en el MIT, para celebrar, la asociación de estudiantes hindúes organiza una noche de gala con mucha buena comida hindú y diferentes shows culturales: danza y música clásicas y modernas (pop hindú -> que no es lo mismo que "indie pop"!!!), sketchs cómicos y pequeñas piezas teatrales... el arte hindú es muy rico, lo cual es de esperarse ya que se trata de una cultura ancestral...

En Harvard y BU también hacen lo mismo. Este año en Harvard tuvieron incluso un desfile de moda, que debe haber sido un show espectacular porque los vestidos hindúes son hermosísimos, coloridos, ...

Yo este es el segundo año que voy: no tiene desperdicio! Y esta vez me puse con todo y me vestí con un sari...

Además de las fotos, antes había puesto un video en mi mit-webspace: Bhangra.avi, que muestra uno de los shows. Bhangra es una forma de música y danza la región Punjabi (Norte de India) que se originó en festejar las cosechas. Es súper alegre y además se ha aggiornado incorporando reggae, hip-hop, etc. Como la música brasileña o africana, cuando la escuchás el cuerpo se te mueve solo y dan ganas de bailar...

Diwali (more properly Deepavali, which means "array of lights") is one of the most important festivities in the indian culture.

By its relevance is equivalent to Christmas for the Christian Western world, and has a similar spirit in the sense that there is good will, joy, etc. The traditional way to celebrate it (and, surprisingly, also the exact event that's commemorated) varies from region to region (like everything in India, it seems...). The date is not very clear to the Western world, since it follows the hindu calendar (eventually, the moon calendar), but it seems to be at the end of October/beginning of November.

In any case, its celebration involves lights, decoration, dressing up, food, music, etc.

At MIT, the Indian students association SANGAM puts together a gala night with lots of good food and different cultural shows, involving dance, music and theatre (classical and modern).

Harvard and BU also do the same. (Although Harvard had a fashion show this year, darn! It must have been fantastic...)

This is my second year, and... the Diwali celebrations must not be missed!

Besides the pics, before I had put a video in my mit-webspace: Bhangra.avi, showing a Bhangra show. Bhangra is a Punjabi form of music and dance, originally to celebrate the harvests. It's super fun and energetic, and it gets renovated by incorporating reggae, hip-hop, etc. Just like brazilian music or african drums music, when you listen to it your body starts moving and feels like dancing...
