The passenger smiles. The Simplon-Orient Express has a comfortable tradition of luxury and opulence to pamper the wealthy traveller. All is well.
... the guttural whispers of bulky men in furry hats, dropping to
self-conscious silence...
... the brilliant sparkle of gemstones slipped quietly into a soft
leather pouch ...
... the sickly sweet smoke that smells nothing like tobacco ...
... the heavy outline of a revolver, tucked into a coat pocket..,
The passenger chuckles. The route has a long past of intrigue and mystery, and has played host to spies and smugglers, diplomats and deceivers. All is well.
... the smudged blur of a chalk symbol, hastily erased from the
carpet ...
...the metallic, salty taste of blood ...
... the muffled thump as the long, dark bulk of a coffin is
loaded aboard ...
... the soft cadences of voices, rising and falling in an ancient
chant ...
The passenger grins. From his pocket he takes the long razor, its edge slicing the light into rainbow and shadow. All is well.
