Discworld
Welcome to Ankh-Morpork, City of One Thousand Surprises!
The Ankh-Morpork Merchants' Guild takes great pleasure in welcoming you
to the twin cities of Ankh-Morpork, The Big Wahooni (pop. 1,000,000).
According to legend, Ankh-Morpork was founded by two orphaned brothers
who were in fact found and suckled by a hippopotamus (lit. orijeple,
although some historians hold that this is a mistranslation of orijaple,
a type of glass-fronted drinks cabinet). More popular legend has it
that at some earlier point in time time a group of wise men survived a
flood sent by the gods by building a huge boat, and taking two of every
type of animal then existing on the Disc. After some weeks the manure
weighed the boat low in the water so they tipped it over the side and
called it Ankh-Morpork.
Points of Interest:
- Unseen University -- The oldest university on the
Disc, Unseen University contains the disc's largest collection of
magical books in its library. Of course, the librarian's a monkey,
but you have to expect a certain amount of this sort of thing at a
wizard's university. He was transformed into an orangutan by a
magical accident, and decided that he preferred it that way.
- The Palace of the Patrician -- Ankh-Morpork has
dallied with many forms of government and has ended up with that form
of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician is the Man; he
has the Vote.
- The Guildhall of the guild of Thieves, Burglars, and
Allied Trades -- This extremely important guild is
responsible for maintaining reasonable levels of crime in the city.
Visitors to Ankh-Morpork are advised to register at the Thieves' Guild
headquarters, in order to get any unpleasantness out of the way early
in your visit. If you should happen to become a customer of the
guild, be sure to get a receipt to avoid unnecessary repeat business.
- Food and Drink -- For the best in Haute Cuisine,
try Harga's House of Ribs; we especially recommend the
All-You-Can-Gobble-For-A-Dollar menu. The more adventurous visitor
can try one of Mr. Dibbler's famous meat pies, made from genuine pig.
For your drinking pleasure, we recommend the Mended Drum, a pub which
practically reeks of ambience. Bards have become set for life on the
strength of their telling of only one of the epic bar brawls common at
the Drum.
Discworld is a one-night game set in Ankh-Morpork on
Terry Pratchett's Discworld. The game will be running several
times this fall and will be GM'd by by Tom Giordano, Kate Mahoney,
Megan McCallion and Eric Rains. If you have any special character
requests (we are willing to consider characters from the books, so
feel free to request those), send E-mail to <disc-gms@mit.edu>.
