Puerto Rico , April 2006
For our April vacation week, we headed to the warm climes of Puerto Rico. We spent a few days in the old part of San Juan, explored the sink holes in the Areceibo area, then headed to the island of Vieques to relax on the beaches and swim at Mosquito Bay, which is home to bioluminescent dinoflagellates that light up when you (or anything else) moves in the water. It is a one-of-a-kind experience that you must enjoy if you are in Puerto Rico. The old part of San Juan is filled with lots of picturesque buildings including the giant fort, El Morro, which guarded the access to the bay. |

Can you imagine having to man this post in a bad storm? |

In the afternoons, the fields around El Morro fill up with picnickers and LOTS of kite flyers. They range from the very young to the not-so-young. |

We took a day to visit the rain forests of El Yunque, a mountain about an hour east of San Juan. The mountain sides were lush with vegetation, wildlife, and waterfalls.
We explored the Condado area of San Juan. Erik thought he'd just dip his feet in to test the water at the beach, but you can see how that ended up....
The beaches on Vieques were great, especially for the kids. They enjoyed their first snorkeling experience here. Just in front of the Trade Winds Inn (this is the beach shown here) were some nice reefs to explore.
