E-9

At the E-7, E-8, and E-9 level in the Air Force (E-8 for Army and Marines), there are two positions in each pay grade. If an Air Force senior NCO has a diamond in the center of his insignia, he is a first sergeant. A star in the same position on an E-9 insignia indicates that the wearer is a Command Chief Master Sergeant. Whether one is, a first sergeant or a command chief master sergeant depends on the person's job. Likewise, Marine Corps master gunnery sergeants and sergeants major receive the same pay but have different responsibilities.
