How to Print the Files

We have tried to make it easy to read the quizzes, exams, and solutions from the screen, but nonetheless you may want to print some of these documents. For that purpose, we have provided Postscript files which contain high resolution (usually 300 dot per inch) images of these documents.

To print the Postscript files, click on the text where it is offered. On the page for Quiz 1 of 1996, for example, it says at the top: "To print this file, we recommend the Postscript version." You would click anywhere within the words "Postscript version."

What happens next depends on the configuration of your browser. In most cases a program called Ghostview will come up automatically, displaying the start of the document. This program has a PRINT option on its menu, which you can click to print the file. On version 1.5, the PRINT option is found on the FILE menu. On some browsers you may get a message that the file cannot be processed, and you will be given an option to download it. Accept this option, and give it a filename ending in ".PS" . For example, suppose you call the file "myfile.PS". To print the file:

on Athena or some other UNIX system, type: "lpr myfile.PS"
in MSDOS, type: "copy /b myfile.PS prn", or "print myfile.PS"
Do not type the quotation marks. (I am not familiar with Macs, but if a Mac user would tell me what to put here, I will add it. Send email to Alan Guth, guth@ctp.mit.edu.)

In all cases one needs a Postscript printer to print these files. The newer files are formatted for Level 2 Postscript printers, since Level 2 includes the option of CCITT Group 4 compression, which leads to much smaller files and faster printing than is possible with Level 1. Athena printers seem to be capable of recognizing Level 2. If there are problems with this, let me know and I will post Level 1 files as well.

If all else fails, it should be possible to print these pages simply by clicking on the PRINT button of your browser, but the resolution obtained this way will be poor (about 75 dot per inch).

If you have any trouble printing the Postscript files, send email to Alan Guth at guth@ctp.mit.edu.
