INFORMATION ON REVIEW QUIZ

TO BE GIVEN FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1998

NO BOOK, NOTES, OR CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED.

STUDENTS WILL TAKE REVIEW QUIZ 2 AT THE SAME HOUR AS THEIR 8.01 LECTURE

Those whose last name begins with A through K will take the quiz in Rm. 26-100.

Those whose last name begins with L through Z will take the quiz in Rm. 50-340.

NOTE: 50-340 is the third floor of Walker Memorial. Please enter from the river side.

It is important that you take the quiz at the location assigned to prevent any overcrowding.

There will be no make-up quizzes, so in the case of excused absences, the remaining grades will be averaged. A grade of zero will be assigned for unexcused missed Review Quizzes. Excuses for these must be requested in advance of the quiz (if you are physically able to do so) from the Course Administrator, Prof. George Koster (Room 4-334, 3-4870, phyjbm@mitvmc.mit.edu). Acceptable excuses include verifiable and significant medical problems, religious holidays, and also serious personal situations, such as deaths in the family. For conflicts with athletic events, Prof. Koster will try to make alternative arrangements for you to take the exam.

The quiz covers all the material from Chapters 4 through 7 of the Study Guide. If you can do all the problems in the Study Guide, you will have no difficulty with the Review Quiz. The Review Quiz will include at least one problem that is at most a slight modification of a problem indicated by ``DO'' or ``STUDY'' on Problem Set 4, 5, 6, or 7. You might also want to look at the relevant review quiz problems from the previous 4 years, available on the 8.01 web page (http://web.mit.edu/8.01/www). The relevant problems are:

• 1994: Review Quiz 1, Problems 4 and 8; Review Quiz 2, Problems 1 and 5
• 1995: Review Quiz 1, Problems 5, 7, and 8; Review Quiz 2, Problems 1, 2, and 5
• 1996: Review Quiz 2, all problems; Review Quiz 3, Postscript or PDF, Problem 1
• 1997: Review Quiz 2, all problems; Review Quiz 3, Problem 3, parts (a)-(d).

The Review Quiz will include an information sheet with all the formulas listed as ``Equations introduced in this chapter'' for Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. You should understand the meaning of these equations, but you need not memorize them.
