It's a bit long, but I hope it helps! Jen Popovic MA candidate, Department of Sociology George Washington University denali@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu ------------ A little history first then how to install OS/2: I received my Micron Tranport P133 TFT with 48Meg of RAM on Monday. It was 17 days late. I made the unfortunate mistake of go for WFW 3.11 instead of Win95. This delayed my shipment because of PCMCIA driver problems under WFW 3.11. I had to switch to Win95 if I wanted my machine in a reasonable time frame. A tough choice - waiting for WFW or getting my machine. Well, I was planning on replacing the OS with OS/2 anyhow so I went with Win95. This is my first notebook so I have nothing to compare it to but I do like it so far. It is FAST (compared to a desktop P90 with 32Meg). On the downside they sent a Passive display instead of an Active but a call to customer support fixed that (I should get my new machine next week). My impressions: It is fast and I like the 800x600x256 display even if it is Passive. The Cirrus Logic drivers for the display support 800x600x65536 on the Active displays only. How to tell if you have a Passive display: If the F10 and F11 have BLUE Symbols on them or just check the model number under the machine, if it ends in DSTN then it is Passive. I'm using the touchpad instead of the trackpoint for now. My thumbs do occassionally touch it and then I'm in another app. It'll take a little getting used to. I'll try the trackpoint sometime next week... The speakers are tinny but that's ok - I mean it is a laptop. I haven't tried any of the Video out ports or a PC Card (modem) yet... How to Install OS/2: First I'd like to thank Paul, Ed, Lou and Tom. Also, I'd like to thank Rich, Kim and Kevin from Micron. These guys helped a lot even though Micron does not OFFICIAL support OS/2 on the Transport. Two of these guys aren't even in Tech Support! OK, here we go... I tried OS/2 Warp Red and OS/2 Warp Connect with no luck. As the Installation disk was booting OS/2 is displayed in the upper left corner, at this point press Alt-F2 and when Disk 1 is loading the drivers will be displayed. This helped a LOT. It was failing on ibm1s506.add - well actually that was the last driver it attempted to load. It actually failed on ibm1flpy.add which was the driver loadded just before. After getting a new ibm1flpy.add it got a little further. Now it came up and told me that "OS/2 can not access the hard drive or the floppy." Great! Ok, after talking to IBM they suggested the new cdrom drivers. No Luck!! Almost going to give up now because Rich, Kim and Kevin at Micron were successful - they used the OS/2 Warp Blue edition. Thought I'd wait for my new machine, maybe it was glithy hardware. However, I received my copy of the June issue of OS/2 Magazine and WOW, they had an article on how to install OS/2 on notebooks!! What luck!! Back to the drawing board... Ok I need to add a few switches to the ibm1s506.add line. Still no luck!! Very frustrated!!! Paul suggested creating Utility Disks - IT WORKED. I could get OS/2 to load (not install, just a command prompt). Ok, I could access the floppy, hard disk and CD-ROM. Hmm... Comparing the Config.sys on disk 1 of the Utilities disks to Disk 1 of the Installation disks discovered that there was no basedev=xdfloppy.flt line for the Utilities disks. REM med it out in Config.sys on Disk 1 of the Installation disks and WOW!!!!!!!!! it installed!!!!!!! I was thrilled - after four days it installed!! I have it working at 800x600 and it is nice. The video drivers can be found at: ftp://ftp.cirrus.com/pub/support/laptop/754x k7548d3.zip DO NOT use there web site the file is misnamed (k7543d8.zip) and you'll never get it!! The solution to the install................ First obtain the following drivers. They can be found in fixpack 17 as well as at various ftp sites (like ftp-os2.nmsu.edu). file date bytes IBM1FLPY.ADD 05-14-96 24,080 IBM1S506.ADD 10-30-95 30,636 OS2DASD.DMD 10-30-95 24,228 OS2CDROM.DMD 10-30-95 26,580 IBMIDECD.FLT 10-30-95 20,358 Copy these files to your BACKED UP version of Disk 1 of the installation disks. Edit config.sys on the BACKED UP Disk 1 Add the following switches: BaseDev=IBM1S506.ADD /A:0 /U:1 /ATAPI REM out the basedev=xdfloppy.flt REM BASEDEV=XDFLOPPY.FLT Add Set copyfromfloppy=1 that's it. Good Luck.
