Archive of Tuesday night dinner parties: Year 1

The first year of Tuesday night dinners was a resounding success. We had no idea it would go on so long, but with the support of our friends and a lot of work in the kitchen, we put on fifty-two consecutive dinners. For historical reference, here is what we served, and sometimes why.

Some of the entries are incomplete. Please send me mail if you can fill in the gaps in our knowledge.

Stuffed zucchini
October 12
Red beans and rice (from some old copy of the Moosewood cookbook)

December 14
Risotto, contributed pumpkin/curry soup. A small dent was made in the pile of excess beverages.
December 21
Red pepper and blended veggie soup. A near culinary disaster brought back from the brink by some last-minute high-potency flavoring agents.
December 28
Inter-holiday lull, but a few people showed up anyway to enjoy pot-stickers from Trader Joe's
January 4
Having survived into the new year, we celebrated by (finally!) purchasing an adequate stock of bowls for our guests, and served noodle soup (ramen), fresh made to the specifications of Wagamama
January 11
We fall back to a staple, yet go overboard anyway: Burritos
January 18
Pizza: An American classic, yet oddly foriegn to our house. None with tomato sauce or meat. The most interesting was the yam and eggplant.
January 25
"Aluminium Chefs": Name any ingredient, we'll cook it. A questionable idea with our friends: pinapple/jicama/avacado salad and black bean soup. WD-40 was suggested, but rejected on the grounds that it is not actually food.
February 1
Lasange, based on the Barilla pre-cooked lasange sheets. We actually tested this before inflicting it on the guests.
February 8
Homemade Chinese. Hot and sour soup (good, although in the end it was neither hot nor sour), rice, fortune cookies, and funny asian salty snacks with seaweed.
February 15
For this, the 20th week of HMS Putnam dinners, we declared a potluck meal, and ended up with food all over the map: cream cheese and tomato quesadillas, chinese meatballs, macaroni and cheese.
February 22
Burgers: Veggie burgers. Bean burgers. Meat bugers. Onion burgers. Fries: "fast-food style".
February 29
"Hearth"-baked pizza, fresh from our stone-enhanced gas oven.
March 7
(Anti)pesto and pasta.
March 14
Tacos, chicken, rice.
March 21
Chipotle chili and cornbread.
March 28
Red beans and rice. More cornbread.
April 4
Pizza redux: The triumph of the cracked pizza stone. Ever had black bean and salsa pizza? Neither had we.
April 11
Putnam meets Orwell. 1984-style stir fry. Brought to you by the Ministry of Plenty. chicken, doubleplusunchicken, egg noodles of hate, stir fry of war, and victory gin. Mandatory donation and blood test waived.
April 18
No dinner at the HMS putnam. Grand opening of 324 Mass Ave.
April 25
30th week of dinner!
May 2
Veg soup, plus leftover food from the premiere of Rune.
May 9
Food.

Britain invades; we serve bangers and mash, washed down with Guinness.

Food.

Ambient heat inspires simplicity. Pasta, salad, strawberries, ice cream.

For our 40th consecutive dinner, we arranged to have the Boston Pops play and some fireworks go off over the river, and held a picnic in the park next door.
July 11
Food.
July 18
Food.
July 25
Tempura (veggies, sweet potato, shrimp) and rice noodle salad. Group effort ensures that this labor-intensive dinner is enjoyed by all, as people take turns slaving over the hot oil.
August 1
In celebration of our rent only being raised ten percent, and consequently being able to look forward to another year of Tuesday night dinners, we go on a baking bonanza. Quiche, fresh bread, and a fruit salad.
August 8
Thai! Chicken and tofu satay, green chili and red peanut sauces, and peach cobbler flambé.
August 15
Food.
August 22
In celebration of Max's triumphant return from hiking the Appilachian trail, we serve U.S. Senate Navy Bean Soup and fresh bread.
August 29
Polenta and salsa, for that Continental/Hispanic cross-over experience.
September 5
Tempura of many vegetables and shrimp and tofu in hot oil. Strawberries bread well, but look like guts when they're fried.
September 12
Black bean soup and fresh chicken, prosuitto, and chese sausage; a side of sweet potato fries.
September 19
Sandwiches of fresh hummus, cheese, and vegetables on a variety of interesting fresh-baked breads.
September 26
Pizza! Inspired by Emma's, we do a crispy thin-crust, and there's lots of onions, prosuitto, and sweet potato to be had.
