The Grid: remixes & production

Marc Almond/Soft Cell: David Ball of The Grid used to be in Soft Cell
with Marc Almond. The Grid remixed a number of songs for the Marc Almond/
Soft Cell "Memorabilia" album. They also produced, mixed and wrote music
on Almond's "Tenement Symphony" album (most notably 'My Hand Over My
Heart'), although Trevor Horn produced or reproduced most of the tracks.
Supposedly, The Grid were to produce some tracks on Almond's "Fantastic
Star" album (out in early 1996) but that did not happen. According to an
interview with Marc, he and David may work together again on a future
project, but not as Soft Cell.

*Useless Man (Subversion) [remix: Matt Fisher]

[original production by: *Ian Dench; **Ingo Vauk & Carl Fysh]

[On CD, there's a big difference between the two original
productions of this song. The Vauk/Fysh version is dance-y and the
Dench version is rock and roll mania.]

[Minty is the name of the band formerly fronted by Bowery.
'Useless Man' is about a master-slave S&M relationship. In its
dance versions, it has a very tough, very trance-y underground
sound. Bowery's rant is explicit, ugly, disturbing, and
compelling. The song was mentioned favorably by Larry Flick in his
'Dance Trax' column in Billboard Magazine, April 8, 1995. The
single was due out at the end of 1994, but it was delayed because
of Bowery's AIDS-related death in December 1994. Minty has
continued as a group to release music and tour].

[Bowery was an infamous performance artist and part of the London
art and party scene from the 80's to the 90's. "Wigstock: The
Movie", a 1995 documentary about the huge annual drag queen
celebration in New York City, is dedicated to Bowery and includes
his performance from 1993 of 'Love Stands Tall and Free'.]

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine: Glam Rock Cops [single]

[on one of two CD singles for the song]

      3:42 Kojak Dub [+ 2 other tracks]

['Kojak' is most obviously the Telly Sevalas cop show from the
70's. There is also a track called 'Kojak' by Lee 'Scratch' Perry,
a.k.a. The Upsetter, that is probably a reggae dub version of the
TV show's theme. (Perry is famous for a reggae-ed up version of
Morricone's music from some of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti
westerns.) The Grid's dub is not reggae, but plays like theme
music for the already over-the-top production by Carter. Fractured
vocals echo, chime in, and percuss, while the tension of the rhythm
mounts up from and falls back to a dance beat solid enough to carry
the listener and the cops through all the gun fire, car crashes,
and donut shops. And it's over before the coffee grows cold.]

the U.K., even mixed to death on Pirate Jungle Radio. Both formats

the Album Version of the title track."]

7:08 You Me and World War Three (The Grid - Orbiting Planet Mix)
      [+ two other tracks]

[Both Grid mixes of 'You Me and World War Three' are dub versions.
The very last three words, "orbiting the planet", are sampled,
repeated and reverberate throughout these two bouncy mixes that
are both similar and strongly in the flavor of mixes done by Fluke
for Bjork and New Order. Many Fluke and Grid remixes have a
bouncy sound. Whatever you call it, these mixes each have a kind
of liveliness that registers somewhere between a good, if fairly
mellow, dance track and an odd mellow dub. Unfortunately, there
is no Grid remix with the whole song, because the song is good,
and the single remix by Tim Simenon is orchestrally grand in a
dance radio pop way. The fourth track is a song that has Bono of
U2 joining Gavin Friday on vocals. Friday's voice as sampled into
the Grid mixes sounds preternaturally like Peter Gabriel's, by the
   way.]

[Gavin Friday provided the vocals for the song 'Strict Tempo' on
David Ball's 1983 solo album "In Strict Tempo" and on the 'Rare
   Tempo' EP.]

8:34 Right Beside You (The Grid 12" Mix)
      [+ 3 tracks]

[The 'Right Beside You' remixes are excellent. The Grid have laid
down a big pulsing sound that works very well on its own in the dub
version, which might be more properly called an instrumental
version. The dub is like the 12" mix, minus the vocals, but what a
propulsion system it has. In the 7" mix you get more immediately
hit by the building momentum of the music with vocals/lyrics that
venture from a desperate ballad into a kind of rap to the "right
beside you" refrain that eventually leaves only a driving beat to
finish off the track. Of course, the 12" and 7" mixes are similar,
but the 12" has a sparer and slightly harder sound with a much
longer build up and finish with the vocals floating in and then out
of the big Grid sound. The 7" and the 12" both work off the same
amount of vocals. Despite that, the 7" mix has a feel all its own,
providing a compressed and altered dancefloor version.]

Billie Ray Martin:

Her album, "Deadline for My Memories", came out January 22, 1996 and is said to have come out in some fashion in Europe in late 1995. The album's first single was 'Your Loving Arms', produced and mixed by The Grid. The initial release of that single in Europe pushed it into the dance charts around the world. The U.S. release made it as a dance club hit also, but some months later. It was later re-released in the U.K., which made the song a radio hit there. According to Larry Flick's Dance Trax column in Billboard magazine, April 20, 1996 issue, "Deadline for My Memories" was scheduled for U.S. release on July 16. (It actually reached some stores in Boston around July 2.) Flick mentioned that Todd Terry had remixed 'Your Loving Arms', but for a promotional release only. This was probably Tee's Miami Mix that later appeared as a b-side. The hope was that that song might have a U.S. radio break-through success similar to Everything But The Girl's "Missing", which only became a radio hit after it was remixed (by Todd Terry and others) for dance clubs. 'Your Loving Arms' had already won over the dance crowd. Too bad that Warner has not made commercially available on CD in the U.S. (and elsewhere!) all the mixes of 'Your Loving Arms' by Todd Terry and Rollo, as well as the full-length club version by Brothers in Rhythm that got hacked in half and included as a b-side to the single for 'Running Around Town'. Other collaborators and mixers associated with the "Deadline for My Memories" album (and its singles) have included Junior Vasquez, Eric Kupper, and Arthur Baker, but Brian Transeau (a.k.a. BT) emerged as the co-producer of the album along with Martin as executive producer. It was Transeau's first big production job for another recording artist. However, there was a widely publicized (in U.K. music press) parting of the ways between Transeau and Martin. Martin wanted more say in the final mix of her album. Martin has had two solo albums released earlier and was a songwriter and vocalist for Electribe 101 on that group's only album, "Electribal Memories" (1990), and its related singles, 'Talking to Myself', 'Tell Me When the Fever Ended' and 'Inside Out'. She is also featured on three songs ('L'Age Du Gateau', 'Hey Music Lover' and 'Pimps Pushers Prostitutes') on the 1989 album "Original Soundtrack" by S'express. Just prior to her ambient EP with The Grid [see listing below], she had collaborated with the techno dance outfit Spooky on many different versions of 'Persuasion', a cover of the Throbbing Gristle song. Billie Ray Martin is also the featured vocalist on Individual's European hit single 'Sky High' and on the U.K. release of new mixes of that same single. She also wrote and sings lead vocals on Datura's 'Mystic Motion' single. As an aside, the other members of Electribe 101 are now the Groove Collective. That group has put out their own music, including an album and a single in early 1996, and has remixed other artists. Won't do dancefloors any damage but don't be surprised to find it on virtually every "Cafe Del Mar" type compilation in the near future. The Grid's David Ball is involved, and his act have done the main remix, though the Richard Norris Mix is at least as gorgeous." (Given four out of five stars)] [From Glitterhouse Records: "The most scarifying and staggeringly original solo Bluesman of the last twenty years is a white American fourtysomething, of Czech descent, who resides in the sun scarred nowheresville of Tucson, Arizona. Rainer Ptacek, for it is he, has taken basic elements of the Blues - a battered, battlescarred National Steel metal-bodied six string guitar, a tin of stones and his haunted, intense vocals, and reinvented the desolation of the Delta Blues into something otherworldy and strange. His latest album, "Nocturnes", includes a remix by English Dance/Trance/Ambient-stars The Grid which has already become a classic chillout-track in the leading clubs around the world."] [Review in July 1995 issue of MOJO, UK music magazine: "Reflective National Steel guitar improvisations recorded over several evenings on a portable DAT machine at the San Pedro Chapel in the Sonoran Desert. One bluesman, his vintage guitars, ambient mikes and tape loops (by which Rainer samples and accompanies his own work). Nod to N2O ventures beyond the spirit of sole endeavour with a remix of the central guitar riff from Ode to N2O by ambient/dance outfit The Grid. -JC"] [Based on the MOJO review, Rainer's new album sounds akin to some of Robert Fripp's projects and performances.] [There's also a positive review in THE MELODY MAKER, July 29, 1995, by Mat Smith, who recommends the album.
