?:?? Beat Called Love (remixed by Nick Hook)

["With a light guitar accent, similar to the Tocayo riff in issue
149, THE GRID's 'Beat Called Love' gets a progressive reconstruc-
tion by Nick Hook. There is a very active bassline and few spoken
lead voxe (sic) over sublimated acidics and easy organ layers. Add
a sprinkle of stings (sic) over the continuously evolving thumpy
percussion and this works out real nicely." Review by Richard Mink
   in DMA (Vol. 3, No. 10, October 1995, p. 78).]

[Review from by Ben Turner from MUZIK magazine, January 1996, p.88:
"Another predictable cash-in on the Trade (a London nightclub -MMS)
dancefloor which, quite frankly, the world could do without.
Still, if 'Enter The Hardbag' sells well enough to help fund A&M's
new underground dance label, thereby allowing it to remain at the
cutting edge, it's worth putting up with. JX, The Grid, Reel to
Real, Felix... You know the score."]

Excursions into Ambience: the Second Orbit

   (Astralwerks, US, 1993)
   CD, ISBN # ?
   CASS, ISBN # ?

   includes:

5:25 Crystal Clear (Clear, Like an Unmuddied Lake)
              [remixed by The Orb, edited]

[Begins with words spoken in the film "Valley of the Dolls", one of
the ways in which this edit varies from an edit of the same remix
on "A Brief History of Ambient: Volume 2". This edit also ends
more abruptly than the other one, which lasts longer and fades away
slowly. I have not heard the full (8:27) remix from the 'Crystal
Clear' single, so I can't compare it to that. The major part of
each edit sounds the same, with the churning sloshing beat and a
couple of spoken samples floating in.]

of the banjo tune of 'Swampthing'. The Stock/Aitken song was a hit

Volume 5

   (World's End Limited, APT/U.K., 1992) CASS / 2xLP, V5? / CD, V5CD

   includes:

4:24 Cybernetic [labeled a "new recording"]

[Synthesizers & Piano: Dave Ball // Drum, Programming & Treatments:
Richard Norris // Crafty Guitar: Robert Fripp // Hurricane Guitar:
Phil Manzanera // Percussion: Steve Sidelnyk]

['Cybernetic' was recorded around the same time as the album "456".
The title hearkens back to "electric head", to that album's overt
concern with technology. The start of the track, with its sampled
vocals, is close to 'Crystal Clear' and other ambient-influenced
tracks on "456". But the heavy guitar sound is reminiscent of
other Fripp-related tracks, like those on "456" and 'Throb' on the
album "Evolver". It's a beautifully moody bastard of a track.]

[also includes: an interview and pictures of The Grid as part of
the accompanying 192 page booklet that profiles each of the 16
other artists/bands included on the recording. The Volume series
is ongoing and excellent with each CD or 2xLP set including over
72 minutes of new and often exclusive music tracks and the
wonderfully informative (and interesting to look at and refer back
to) booklet. The Volume series is related to the Trance series.

   Boston, MA, U.S.A. store]
