O yeah, last weekend was Easter. I did stuff last weekend. Saturday I went to Stuttgart, to see Wilhelma. Wilhelma is a combination zoo and botanical gardens. This was mostly accomplished by having plants growing in the animal cages, which wound around the cage, hiding much of the bars. I was fairly nice. I was a beautiful day Saturday, a good day to spend outside. Sunday was Easter. Not much happened. I slept in and failed to go to church in the cathedral, like I'd planned. It was a wet and unpleasant day out, so I mostly stayed in and hung out. Monday I went to a bunch of places with Ralf. First, to Schloss Lichtenstein, which was used as a hunting lodge. Very small, for a castle, but kind of amusing. Very butch. Lots of armor around, and one of the most decorated rooms was the drinking room. It had a pedastal/podium thing that you climbed stairs to get to, sort of like in cathedrals. In this case, you were supposed to go up there and tell your drunken hunting stories. The other two places we went were two caves, Baerenhoehle and... I can't remember the name of the other, and can't find my ticket stub to look it up. Baerenhoehle was more impressive, full of stalagetites and stalagmites and the like. The other was less so, but it was at the mouth of a river, so we went into it in a boat. It was very short heightwise, so we had to duck for a large part of the tour. Ralf said he didn't remember it being so short the last time he was there. Of course, the last time he was about 6 years old. The cave was by the town he was born in, and he went the first time on a school trip. This week at work was again, useless. The network started working Wednesday, but it turned out that you had to change the domaine name on your computer and stuff, which someone else had to do. No one did that for me until today. Then it turned out that they hadn't hooked up the server I need with the goofy bibliography info on it, so I still couldn't work. This week was so useless! German Word of the Week: gefaehrlich = adj. dangerous, perilous When I went to the zoo, there were lots of signs saying basically that you shouldn't taunt the animals and that they were dangerous. I don't think they used the word gefaehrlich per se, it was a different word, ge- something else, probably a verb. (For those of you who don't know German, that's like saying it was a verb that ended with -ed.) What struck me about these signs, was that they were always illustrated, probably for the benefit of children, showing what was likely to happen if you didn't follow the directions. They were much more graphic than I would have expected. The one by the aligator pit, for example. There was this frowning man who had stuck his hand over the edge of the guard rail. The alligator had jumped up and bit him, and was grinning evily about half way down the side of the pit. The man's hand was mangled and blood was gushing out of it. All of this was drawn in a simple, cartoony sort of way. I found it deeply disturbing. Honor and Glory... to Mira and Alexander, Shelly, Mom, and MikeP for letters to Grant, for ordering my commencement robe to Ralf, for taking me out to see the sights Monday Dishonor and Notoriety... to the goofusheads working on the network at work to train tickets which do not clearly state which trains they're good for Tschuess!
