How a Thief Stole the Horizon
In the beginning when it was always dark,
a god plucked out the eye of a giant fish
and hung it in the sky.
Night became day
and the place between the water and the sky
was where the gods began to walk.
One day while this god walked along the horizon,
a fish jumped out of a breaking wave and swallowed her.
Why have you done this? said the god from the fish's belly.
Because you stole my eye, said the fish.
If I give it back, will you let me go?
How do I know you won't run away?
I promise and a god's promise can never be broken.
So the fish set the god back on the shore.
But when he did, the god plucked out the fish's other eye
and hung it in the sky to look down on the Earth at night.
And that is how the sun and moon came to be,
and why it is better to live with one eye than bargain with a
thief.
