The Origin of Life

At first the gods walked hundreds abreast in columns that
filled the horizon until one day a single god turned and
walked another way. A second god followed suit and then a
third and soon the gods were walking in as many different
directions as there were gods and the horizon was empty.

Seeing that he was alone, an ancient god lay down in the
middle of the horizon and stayed there for a thousand years.
One day a young god found him there.

What are you doing? asked the young god.

Once,,
said the ancient god,
you and I might have walked as companions do, arm in arm.
But one of us turned round, and then another and now we are as
far from one another as one end of the universe is from the other.

And so the young god lay down next to the elder,
and soon a third god joined them and a fourth and after a time
the horizon was once again filled with thousands of gods
lying in droves along the way.

And that is how the first universe ended.
