Why The Gods Were Left Behind
In the beginning the horizon teemed with gods,
but with each passing eon one less god stood on the horizon
until there were only seven,
each sitting atop an ancient stone, lamenting.
Now that the others have gone, they each thought to themselves,
why are we left behind?
Perhaps it is a punishment, said the first god.
Or a reward, said the second.
Perhaps we are forgotten, said the third.
Who would have forgotten us? said the fourth.
Our ancestors, said the fifth.
We have no ancestors, said the sixth.
If we want to leave the earth, said the seventh god,
perhaps we must first forget one another.
And so the gods embraced the stones they sat upon as if they
were lovers. They spoke softly to th stones
and caressed their blemishes
and loved them so deeply, they soon forgot the other gods.
But stone is only stone, and because it cannot love in return,
the gods grew even more desolate,
and in their desolation remembered one another.
And that is why you can only forget yourself
if what you love loves you.
