Why the Gods Are Invisible

Once a forest of banyan trees grew into the shape of a temple.
It was in the thickest part of the jungle and so vast that
when the gods found it,
they floated under its topmost branches
as motes of dust do in the sunlight.

After we have gone from the earth, people will come, said a god.
They will find this temple and think we were titans.

They will be afraid.

They will bow down and look up when they pray to us.

Though we are no bigger than motes, they will think us giants.

Perhaps we should make ourselves as big as they will imagine us.

No matter how large we make ourselves,
they will make us larger.

It is their nature, said a god.

And that is why the bigger the gods, they harder they are to
see.
