Why Gods Are Like Clouds

When the gods opened their eyes,
they were floating above the horizon
like breath exhaled in winter.

Then the wind blew northward
and they came to where the sun rose and fell once a year.

Time slows when the wind blows, said a god.

Then the wind blew eastward until a day was a day.

Time races when the wind does, said another.

Then the wind blew southward,
and they came to where they began.

Here time and wind must be the same, said a third god.

Then the wind blew westward,
so that it was always night.

Shall we rest? asked a god.

When time stops, said another.

And that is why gods are like clouds,
and why, when the air is still, time stops.
