How the Gods Made Altars out of Mountains

One day the gods gathered up stones that had fallen from the
mountains and built a temple.

When they finished, the first god asked,
Who will pray in this temple?

There is no one but us,said the second.

Then who shall we pray to?

It is pointless to pray to ourselves.
Let us make up a god and pray to her.

Where’s the good in that?
It would be like praying to the air.

The sixth god said,
Perhaps it is best to destroy the temple
and return the stones to the mountains.

The mountains were so joyful at the return of their stones
that they caught the wind
and made it whistle through their peaks.

Someday people will hear this, said the seventh god.

And that is why, when we hear the wind
whistling in the mountains,
we think of gods.
