Introduction: A Conference on Jewish Bioethics

Following our successful founding conference in Philadelphia last year, APF and a variety of affiliated groups are busily planning our next conference, to be held in Boston on Sunday and Monday of Columbus Day weekend in October 1999. The upcoming conference will continue our theme: "Jewish Perspectives on Bioethics in the 21st Century".

The conference will bring together an impressive group of bioethicists, philosophers, clinicians, rabbis, communal leaders, and other scholars from across the Jewish spectrum to engage in a pluralistic, cross-disciplinary conversation about important topics in Jewish Bioethics today.

Speakers. Two dozen distinguished scholars will be making presentations, including Rabbi Lord Immanuel Jakobovits and Rabbi Elliott Dorff. [list of faculty and conference committee]

Sessions. Plenary sessions at the conference will include:

  • "Is There a Jewish Bioethics?" (an exploration of the root philosophical and theological bases for a Jewish Bioethics)
  • "Health Priorities for the Jewish Community"
  • "Reproductive Technologies: Views from Israel and the United States"
  • "Termination of Life" (a chavrusa-style approach to a relevant case study)

In addition, there will also be several smaller segments of the conference with over a dozen breakout sessions and conference workshops to choose from. [full conference schedule]

CME Credits. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will be offered. [details]
