For instance, at the Belgian coast, the difference between high and 
low tide is about 12 meters ; in Nice, it's only a few decimeters, in 
Teneriffe, it's one meter. One explanation I was told is that isolated 
seas (like the Mediterranean) don't have enough time to 'fill up', but 
then there should be an enormous current at the street of Gibraltar, I 
think. (then again, that explanation doesn't apply for Teneriffe)
