Summary of Camp Mataponi
Camp is located 2 and a half hours north of Boston on the northwest shore of Sebago Lake. The camp is located on a semiprivate cove with about 1000 feet of beach and an additional 2000 feet of shore line. The owner is open to nudity on the waterfront and is aware of our costs for space rental last year. Following is a listing of the cabins or cabin type and any relevant info for Omni for reference.
There are 27 sleeping cabins, some built as two cabin units. Each has electricity, hot and cold running water, at least one shower and toilet , lots of closet and shelf space and screened windows with sliding plexiglass windows. 18 of them are about 20' x 20' (Omni 30' x 15) and 9 are 17' x 20'. Capacity per cabin is about 8-10 for 280 total. There are also two wings off of the Senior Lodge with a total capacity of 25-30 (teachers?)
Kitchen is quite large. Two vulcan 6 burner gas ovens, a 3 oven stack oven, 2 griddles, 1 fryolater, 3 large sinks, a floor size mixer and a table top mixer and about 20' of table-work space. 2 walk-in coolers and 1 walk-in freezer (all 8' x 13') (Omni about 8' x 8' and 5' x 8' for cooler and one chest freezer), a 16' x 12' dry goods storage with many shelves. Pass throughs for both dishes and food. 2 salad bars. Decent dish machine and pot sink. 2 toilets in kitchen and 2 in dining hall. 75 gallon professional water heater with circulating booster. (40 gallon household at Omni) All is clean and functional.
Small dining room off kitchen with separate entrance (13' x 14') good for mealtime meetings (reps), etc.
Main Dining Hall is an octagon with flat walls 56' in all four axes. Ceiling is vaulted to skylight peak about 40' from floor. Lots of full length windows with vents and magnificent view of lake. Smooth polyed wood floor and movable seating for 300. Built in benches on outside deck that surrounds on 6 sides.
Lodges:
Ray's Lodge: 31' x 40' screened windows, painted plywood floor, high roof, no poles (Omni Studio 27' x 40')
Junior Lodge: 40' x 40' polyed wood floor clean half log interior and high roof
Senior Lodge: 30' x 30' good floor and fireplace(?)
Social Hall: 56' x 30' with stage on long wall. Has two poles and is slightly smaller (Omni Lodge 60' x 34') and not as high ceiling as Omni.
Sub Lodge: Has three adjoining rooms with about 15' wide and 8' high doorways on 20' wall. Center room is 22' x 15' and wings are 21' x 19' for a total length (although not clear view to all corners) of 53'. There is also two bathrooms with shower, toilet and sink.
Other Spaces:
Arts & Crafts is two front to back rooms attached to the social hall. Each is 24' x 28'. Perhaps one could be a class (with a marley) and the other could be the camp store.
Infirmary: 1 exam room (9' x 16'), 3 bedrooms (2: 8' x 16', 1: 8' x 8'), 2 half baths and 1 full bath.
Counselor Den: 8' x 10' with fireplace (Teens?)
Nature: two attached rooms octagonal in shape about 25' across but each is cut up (Child Care?)
Beehive: smooth floor, paneled walls (20' x 18') (Child care?)
Doctor's House: Two bedrooms and sitting room (Camp Coordinator and Family????)
Shower House: 6(???) showers
Laundry: 12 professional sink style washing machines with attached spinner and 2 large commercial dryers
Office: Sitting room and large office 10' x 35' and two small bedrooms with shared full bath (Bookkeeper and Registrar?) 1 small office (off-limits) and 1 half bath.
Outside Facilities: 1 professional size soccer field, several other filed spaces and lots of open ground, 1 softball field, 1 asphalt volleyball court, 1 asphalt basketball court with professional glass backboards, ropes course, 3 asphalt tennis courts, 5 clay (off-limits) tennis courts, 1 decent size fire area (really a flat, somewhat elevated area with benches).
The site has sufficient parking and about 100 acres to camp in.
It is available for the last two weeks of August ( Sunday night, August 17th to Monday Sept. 1)
Foreseeable Drawbacks at present: Only 14 days, not 16. No space as nice as Omni Lodge without using Dining room. Waterfront not totally private.
Pluses: lager capacity than Omni (400+), more nice dance spaces (6) of which 4 are comparable to the studio or better. Much better shape than Omni without being plush. Available.
My recommendation and that of Steve Robins, Laurie Tennant-Gadd and her family (including Mel an architect) is that this is fine and we should go for it. I will initiate talks with the owner about renting and cost, but won't do anything final without approval. I believe we have time (a couple of weeks) with him. I will have video and snaps available by the end of the week. I am also pursuing a site in Duxbury MA that is only available for a week but holds over 500 (don't want to put eggs all in one basket) another leads from Michael Beattie and Bill Bassett. I will call meeting in late afternoon for your advise, questions and comments. Take Care. Bill
