Checkins:

Dance Friday going well, just had annual meeting and filled officer positions including next year's rep (Maya Apfelbaum); one of our main tape makers just moved to Northampton.

Dance Spree move back to downtown Northampton (above Fitzwilly's on Main Street); doing well, Len Huber joining Wes Brown on the rep body for the next year.

Barefoot Boogie: highest attendance, in good financial health and plannig to buy a sound system; may change structure slightly (quarterly rather than monthly meetings); need more volunteers

Dance Hartford: starting 3rd Saturday in September and weekly through October; may change to every other Saturday beginning November; has a nice sound system

Dance Haven: off for the summer, going to a new space in September

Other dances:
California Dance Jam (EBay Oakland) 30-50 people moving from private to collective ownership 1st Friday is especially child friendly

Frolic in New Paltz doing well, volunteerism up, attendance down (changed to inside), may have new sound system; April weekend went very well

Northern California Dance weekend event occurred, DNE'rs welcome

Review of Concensus process:
Steve Robbins Concern: There is very small number of DNE-ers present for the ratio of folks present at camp.

Review of Concensus process:

RE: We are a consensus group; everyone who is there an present at the meeting. We do the best we can. Any decisions that were made in 1st week do need to be ratified/confirmed in the 2nd week of camp else they cannot pass.

So today, we want ot pss (or ammend) last weeks proposals.

Bylaws call for up to 13 reps
Proposal Passed Last Week:
BYLAW: The bylaws call for upt to 13 reps 2 from each of the 5 dances (2x5=10) 3 RAL = 13 reps

If there are vacant rep slots , the reps can solicit a 3rd rep from DNE of the dances. This is a one year proposal Reps have a staggered term.

We want the Communities blessing to work on this This is a test to try how this will work Is it okay for community for us reps to work on it. We con't want to increast # of reps (13). If city has more than 2 people avail to do rep wk, can be 3 at that city. This would not increase # of reps (13) This won't mean more represention for that city; that city won't carry more wt. This is about increasing flexibility, making it easier for people to serve in a rep in a different capacity. What we're looking at is a restructuring, but not in a long term way. Ths is just a temporary trial option.

Concern:
I think dances should be allowed to put forwrd more than 3 reps if other dances don't have enough... Can we ammend it to more? (Non-blocking concern)

Consensus Passed!!!

Paul Freundlich: HomePlace
DNE strategy process for site search

There are 3 strategys being considered:
  1. Rent another place just like this
  2. Buy a place. We've gathered some capital towards this goal (close to $100,000) (There is some plain, unbuilt land available)
  3. Finding someone else to go in with, or working with some one who already has some space (schools, camps, private individuals, etc).
THe reps have been busy workin out dance camp
The elders have been busy woking out chore system for this camp

Proposal:
At this Community Meeting, we are seeking the approval of the community to form and empower a group of committed community members to find DNE's next home. Their task will be to rapidly and effectively identify the range of options available; bring their recommendations to the Reps;and devise an action plan for implementation. The process has been cleared with the Reps and the Elders, and we ask for your support.

THe HomePlace Fund has approx. $7,000
THe reps agree to abide by the decions of the larger group, so it wont be just the reps making this decision

Open discussion: Fishbowl

Fear DNE will collapse by trying to grow to fast
Whether or not we buy land or not, we will have DNE in our hearts
Don't let fear dominate our decision
I see our community hitting walls: size, availability,
We;ll do somethin. It may not look like what we've done in the past
What we find may well outshine what we've done in the past
The process by which we're seeking to grow and change needs to be streamlined, due to sense of urgency. Hw do we transend the urgency, the obsticles such as oo many cooks watering down the broth.
Until visio statement is very clear, I would want the site searched , hopefully renting space before buying, due to diff of opinion we have.
Concern for the children being made a part of the community. We must make space for the children. W/O kids, energy of DNE will be v. diff.
Smaller camp or no camp for next yer so we can have enouh time for proper decision, not to be rushed by urgency.
A smll camp may help slow our growth momentum.
I want this search committy to be a plan committy... we are looking at not just rent or buy, but other issues. We must have a process to brig 30 folks together... to work on the other issues (?), what we're goin to do w/our community
Analogy: We're preg, not married, what are we goin to do. Let's not push this decision because of our time urgency..
Let's hold these 2 issues separately: space for next year, buying for Homeplace.
Homeplace was an investment. 42 folks have put in $100. It was to be $100 per perosn per year. We've only put in $7,000 in 3 years. This community has not put it's $ where it's mouth is. I Beleive we are not ready to buy a space, if we are not willing to invest in land.!!
This process may take longer than we think: it's oportunistic. We should be able to take our time, and be able to act quickly. Encourge communication.
I feel lot of anxiety to "do it right". We make mistakes and we cna fix them. Let us make mistakes, trust ourselves to tr7y, try try. Nothig is so horrible that we can undo
THere is spirtit guiding DNE, I trust the 30 people will rep the spirit. I thik we'llclash ego and fear if we don;'t let go and trust theh Spirit of DNE
Trust. We can buy te land really cheap. We'll work the rest out, building oky. Don't do too much thinking. Just dance and hve fun. It we buy large, rent nd put rent $ in DNE
Let's just rent for a ayear or two, so we can focos and buy right if and when we do buy.
I've not put my $100/yr because I thouht DNE should ntot be residential. DNE is my home, I want to keep it my home. I want any residential place to be off site.
I've been in long ago. What I see you doing is right. Have faith in yourselves. I've seen many communities who want to share with you. There is something out there. You are doing it right.
Trust. Yes, there is urgecny. I trust the commity, give it the approval to make the right next step. That's how we walk thru life, by taking that next step

Concerns

We have not undertaken raising money.
By ging this gropp $ to buy, we have limited our vision I think if we push $1,000 /person, then we'll hve the $ to buy what ever we want. I don't think we can buy anything with what we have now
I like to see the commity of 30 to be limited to those who will live at the homeplace
"The committy is not Homeplce, but of camp for next year It is not decision making commity, but research committy, and finding out all they can find about sites/spaces" It's about camp next year, not HomePlce
The decision legally risides w/reps Reps are sharing power, not givin it up.
If you are concerned about buying land, be on the committy to voice your concern.
I'm concerned about the limit of 30. I want it to read "Approx 30"
MODIFIED ?
Let's use our community resourses more
(MTG FACILITATION
More outreach to rest of community who does't attend mtgs
I share concern of budget constraint.
Raising $ for intengible vs for specific house. Putting my $ wherer my mouth is when I know what it is I'm putting $ into for!
I'm committed to land and community. But even I went bnkrup, becue I didn't know the ... of $. I'd have to block "up to and includijg puchasing buying a camp w/o examining equity....." We could blow it! Be careful!! You must know what's up!!
Formation of committee to do the search (reserch) and do the work and then make recommendation
Empower that gorup to make decision to rent for next year/every year
Empower group to mke decisino ot buy
Blocking concern: Not redy to buy now... not enough commitment and $ I do not like the implied enthusiasm to rush out and buy. The lanuage in this proposal that usues the owrk to buy is not nec. They already have the power I'm against language that implies that we are encourgaging to buy.
#6 ".....i.e. buy or rent"
#8 "....Up to and incluing buying camp

PROPOSAL PASSED!!!!!

Concerns

Previous week folks passed it as it was , with "buyin or rent" in it. Seems we've broken trust
Prtnership w/bank mortgages children's future is not ownership
We are burdened or blessed with 2 community meetings. Lets just make it work.
Concern that this body look at solutino that doesn't involve full scale camp -

Blocking concern :

THe way the committy is formed: I do not understand why we would exlculde anyone form this comittee. Anyone who want to be on the group should be on the group It should be an open committee

Change: everyone who want to be on it can and will be on it. Wide open committee...

No,that will not work.

Blocking Concern: buying = NO
