Life is a Dance

David Policar 1998

Life is a dance, you keep telling me
As you soar through it, whirling, blurred, laughing,
Crying, loud, flying, proud, crashing,
Reveling, joyous, despairing, and always inventing,
Constrained by no rhyme and no rhythm, no pattern to follow
Always a new goal before you, a new game to play.

I ask, what good is there in dancing?
What good to be soaring in soul,
When your wheel's misaligned and off-center?
What use speed, when you're out of control?

To live such a life takes its toll.
Burning bright, to die out in an hour,
Flying high, plunging deep, great adventure!
But in slow steady growth is more power.

But still, as you keep on your whirling,
Invent new rules as you desire,
Replace rhyme and rhythm with soaring,
Acknowledge no pattern but motion,
You keep telling me life is a dance.
