Caged

David Policar 1994

A cry of hunger echoes through my empty unlit halls,
From the aged throat of the hunter pacing past my ageless walls.
Trapped between unyielding stone
And iron gates and doorways barred,
He seeks his forest home alone,
But bars are strong and walls are hard,
And passage out I'll never yield,
Yet still he longs for night skies, starred,
And moonlight in a shadowed field.
