On a Night in June, Greatwoods, Mansfield, Massachusetts

Chuck Berry plays the I.R.S. Blues in the key of "E"

Chuck's sardonic smile is lost with the reduced resolution of this image. You can see a bit of it in the original photo.

You see, Chuck usually hits the stage runnin', and does a couple of real fast, hot numbers to get the audience going. This night, he came on stage and played a slow blues for five minutes. He just stood there-- staring out at the audience.

It seems that the Internal Revenue Service had just visited him back stage.

They made Chuck fork over $7,000 before he went on.

Chuck shared his loss with the audience without ever telling them what had befallen him. Then he cut into "Johnny B. Goode".

He did a smokin' show that night...
