Now, to what I really want to talk about.
Let's start with elian gonzales. In case you're reading this long after the fuss has passed, or you have been under a rock for four months, or you are otherwise uninformed: this is the cuban kid they fished out of the ocean. Mommy had custody of the kid and tried to emigrate to the US. She and most of the rest of the folks on that trip became fish food. Now, the kid is staying with an uncle in Little Cuba, the dad is trying to get custody, it's become an International Incident, and there are all kinds of cuban expats rioting in miami.
What the fuck?
Who is this kid? Who are these people? What are they smoking? Where can I get some?
And perhaps more to the point, who cares? Isn't there something better to riot about?
I want to eviscerate every reporter who does a story on dear little elian. Oh yes, and every god-fearing, upper-middle-class-bitch shrilly nannering on NPR one way or the other based on what she thinks is best for the kid. She doesn't care about the plight of poor oppressed starving children the world over unless the media tells her to.
Someone ought to shoot the kid in the head and end the controversy.
Now, another topic altogether. This one is a little closer to home. Institute, sweet institute.
This academic year, one student suffocated while doing nitrous. Another fell off a roof. Another had a devastating car accident. An alum jumped off a frathouse and died. One suicided at home while taking a term off. Last week, a student's room caught on fire, landing her in intensive care for severe burns and 7 CPs in the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Oh wait. News just came through, she died. RIP.
MIT failed to build the extra dorm, delaying the frosh must live on campus decree by a year, but is determined to proceed. Cambridge and MIT together are trying to shut down Steer Roast. There are charges pending related to the mayhem in the previous paragraph. The Undergraduate Association people spectacularly botched the first election that people cared about for its president and VP positions. Three deans in highly significant positions (WRT student life) are getting the fuck out of Dodge, citing the pressures of the job.
Admins tagged prefrosh and ordered them not to leave campus. Newspapers are doing articles on hacking. The UA asked students not to discuss the elections the second time around.
Public perceptions of the tute are colored by media representations, and parents are demanding that MIT play the role of mommy, demanding that MIT be more "supportive" of its students. Students are asking MIT to back off and let them preserve their culture. Unusual student cultures are being quashed, directly and indirectly, by recent decisions.
Spring term is always harder than fall term. It seems like everyone has simply taken leave of their senses, and as the collective sanity level of the student body decreases, the pressure from On High increases. Thus breaking students even more.
Woo! And it's only april! Now what?
And then to the thing that made me decide to rant today, after all. Authorities have recently discovered that a couple of first graders have conspired to murder one of their classmates. Now, I don't think this is all that unusual. But now everyone is determined to root out violence among our children - they, of course, have been suspended.
Now, I wouldn't call these kids "nice" - but I'd have to call them normal.
But this is shocking, truly shocking, and tragic, and something must be done to save our children from each other! Something terrible has happened to warp the minds of these innocents!
Bullshit. Kids are kids, and kids are vicious, nasty little creatures. They have no "morality", they are freshly baked. Civilized thought hasn't been drilled into them yet. And our kids were bred to survive in a wild, harsh environment, filled with killer beasts and deprivation.
Just like grownups, actually. And how can a poorly trained, poorly socialized parent adequately brainwash these beasts? Whining, simpering parents who want everything easy give rise to whining, simpering kids who want everything - and are willing to take it.
Anyone who calls a child a "little angel" or "innocent" ought to be locked in a room with thirty 5-year olds and a broken television.
Go read The Misanthropic Bitch. But not if you're a teen mother or deluded into thinking the world is a pleasant place.
