Welcome to Ann-Marie's Home Page (the page which
will always be under construction...tho' some bits will always need
more work than others....)
Hello! I just got my PhD from the (Biology)
department here at MIT. I did my thesis in
the laboratory of Dr. Phillips W. Robbins and my thesis project
involved studying cell wall mutations in the yeast Saccharomyces
cerevisiae. I didn't work alone, I had three cool and spiffy
UROPs Craig Horenstein, Amy Marie
Yu and Johanna Bobrow. Craig graduated 2 years ago, Amy graduated
last year and Johanna will finish up this year. I also worked closely
with Barbara Osmond, the technician sent by the Gods. She's really
cool and taught me everything I know about yeast genetics.
There is actually alot known about Saccharomyces. Recently,
the entire genome was sequenced.
There are several other sites which allow for lots of access to the
information that researchers have gathered about the genes and their
functions. For example, there's the Yeast
Genome Project Page, the Organism Databases
listing, and MIPS. I have an
entire page devoted to Biology Links which
is also interesting. There is even a page devoted to
Saccharomyces cerevisiae lab links!
But I don't just spend my time doing biology....
I'm a brother of Alpha Phi Omega
(APO)
I'm also very interested in computers. I guess that's proven by the
fact that I'm a member of
SIPB and a
SIPB webmaster.
There are other things that I'm interested in as well....
- I am very interested in world religions. I am a member of ECKANKAR. Check out my World Religions page to find out about ECKANKAR
and many other religions, some more common than others.
- I also like theater alot and am a member of the MIT
Shakespeare Ensemble. We'll see if I can do more than just be a
good member of the audience...we'll see if I can actually act...The
most recent production we did was of Pericles
where I played Helicanus, the old councilor. I also have had the
opportunity act and stagemanage for Playwrights in Performance and
have acted with the MIT Community Players.
- My first love in science fiction movies is Star Wars This STAR
WARS Page has alot of neat pictures. And this
Star Wars Page has some cool ways of getting around.
- After I got into graduate school, I began to enjoy STAR TREK...........even some of
the old characters and
episodes. For those of you who are trekkers...I must admit tha tI
didn't quite understand the allure of Star Trek until I got to
MIT. Here are more STAR
TREK LINKS. And if that's not enough....here's some more Trek stuff. While I don't
think I can call myself a trekker yet.....I'm working on it....
- I also occassionally (read approx. once a week) play dungeons and dragons
with a few classmates. There are several dungeons and dragons sites
out on the web. Discount Games Co.
sells alot of Advanced D&D books, modules, and accessories. There is
a really really cool TSR
site...the only problem is that you need to read German to be able
to understand it...oh well...
- I suppose the natural progression from D&D is the Society for Creative Anacronism , otherwise
known as "The SCA". These are folks who
get together to "play the middle ages". If you're from MIT, you've
probably seem some of them dressed up in armor bashing each other
about the head and neck with rattan swords. If you're not from around
here, maybe you've seen folks like them in news clips. But the folks
who hang out in the SCA do more than just run around in armor, most
every trade and occupation that you can think of is represented. For
me, that's the fun of it all, learning how to make stuff, not the
least of which is period garb (clothing). The MIT SCA group is called
Mitgaard . Mitgaard is in the borough of
Carolingia . Carolingia is in the
East Kingdom. That should be enough to get you started in the
world of the SCA. It's really fun.
- I really like
. I have almost
all of Scott Adams' books and was absolutely thrilled when he showed
up at MIT to give a lecture! There are alot of dilbert out on the
net!!! Use AltaVista to
find more links!!! I should have a Dilbert
Page of my own up soon...but it is 
under
construction right now.
This home page is really just an
experiment for me in writing in HTML....
so I guess you could say that it is permenently under
construction.
Well, I need to return to being a graduate student...... I'll put up
more later.
