Examining New Orleans 'After Katrina'

The free commemorative exhibition, titled "After Katrina: MIT’s Department of Urban Studies + Planning Takes On Big Questions About Rebuilding" will run through September 15 and is sponsored by the Department of Urban Studies + Planning (DUSP), the School of Architecture + Planning (SA+P), the MIT Museum and the MIT Public Service Center.

At the reception, Karl Seidman, senior lecturer in DUSP, will sign copies of his new book, "Coming Home to New Orleans: Neighborhood Rebuilding After Katrina" (Oxford University Press, 2013). The book documents grassroots rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and draws lessons on their contribution to the post-disaster recovery of cities.

In the eight years since Hurricane Katrina, DUSP and SA+P faculty, students and alumni have worked with local organizations on rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Their efforts have been been sustained by relationships built in the city, and through their dedicated teaching, studies and community service work in post-Katrina rebuilding.
