writing and speaking to a nonexpert, nonmanagerial audience; getting to the point; illustrating complexity

* follow-up -- review of white papers / literature reviews.

* in class -- comparing density guidelines for lay v. more expert audiences; prep for final project.

* for next class -- 1) Read online samples of general-interest articles for lay audiences at http://web.mit.edu/21w.780/jackk/layex.htm.

2) Bring copies of an article from Scientific American, Nature or other general interest publication.

* assignment, as a first stage of the final project, emailed to jackk@mit.edu as well as posted to your alias folder by noon Nov. 1 -- at least two illustrations and related text aimed at a well-educated lay audience (a readership of Harvard and Wellesley BAs in literature, for example). Illustrations and text should explain technical terms and/or analytical details covered in your white paper / literature review.
