READINGS

Slash fandom has historically been an underground phenomenon, which was hard for students to access and study directly. In the digital age, a few brave fans are placing their fan fiction on the web, including some slash stories. These are not always the richest and best stories in a given fandom; often, they are written by newcomers rather than established authors who publish their own zines and have built up a reputation within fandom. However, this is a place where one can direct students who want to take a look at slash first hand. What follows are a few fan sites relvent to today's topic.

http://www.greatbasin.com/~kuryakin/uncle/wasaslash.html. This is a site created by MAN FROM UNCLE fans which includes a basic explanation of slash.

ftp://ftp.lysator.liu.se/pub/blake7/misc/slash.defense. This is a site created by fans of the British SF series, BLAKE'S 7, defending slash against common criticisms.

http://members.aol.com/ksnicholas/fanfic/slash.html. This is one of the best sites to consult, since it has links to many other slash sites, and includes a good amount of fanfiction around diverse shows, including Xena slash.

http://www.ar.com.au/~jriddler/slash.html#links. Another good point of entry into slash fandom, with many links and many stories.

For people seeking more and up-to-date information on the letterwriting campaign to get a queer character on STAR TREK, see http://www.ccnet.com/gaytrek/history.html

Happy hunting.
