The New York Times on the Web is the slickest web-based news "paper" I
have seen. I like how it takes advantage of smooth, organized space to
allow me to read the news I want quickly. It adds to the old-school "news
story" with related web-links, color photos, audio clips, etc.
One particular addition I like are the PhotoBubbles. Each photobubble is
a spherical "photo" comprised of two 180 panoramic snapshots digitally
sandwitched together. You view the photo standing in the middle -- you
can look up, down, and all around, as well as zoom in and out. The
scrolling was extremely smooth. I really got the impression of a virtual
reality; it was as if I was actually standing there...
Unfortunately you need a Mac or a Windows machine to view the photobubbles
as the company that created the technology, http://www.omniview.com/ does
not seem to support un*x.
