This is the main page of the company Art Technology Group, based in Boston.
Although the site itself is not tremendously interesting, their Dynamo
product has a lot of interesting media applications. Essentially, one of the
strong points of Dynamo is that it tracks information about users on an
entire organization of web pages (such as all of the web.mit.edu pages), and
can use that information that it gathers to display ads to target audiences.
For example, if I happened to look at all sorts of athletic pages on a site,
it could display an ad for Nike, whereas if I looked at a lot of
technical/programming pages an ad for Sun's javasoft page might appear.
Advertisers already look at age groups, sex, etc. when determining where to
place their ads; this might help direct the ads to an even smaller (but more
receptive) audience.
