Dear Freshman, Let me start off by adding my congratulations to the long list of those you've already received. Getting into MIT is a feat which few have accomplished, and is something to be proud of. Your experience here will be unlike any other college experience, as MIT is one of the most unique places on Earth, and I can say for sure that your choice of living groups will have the most profound effect on your experience here. You will be given ample time to change your classes and your major, but not your housing. Over the course of three days in late August, MIT will send you out into Boston and tell you to find a place to live. Are you ready? My name is Greg Mahowald, and I am the President of Theta Chi Fraternity. My experience in coming to MIT was a little different than most, as I transferred here from Arizona State University. This has given me a unique perspective on living at MIT. Being a transfer, I was admitted about a month before orientation, and never received these books you are looking at now, or the many calls and summer party invitations that will surely be coming your way. I figured I would just find a place to live when I got to MIT, and never really had any idea what was coming my way during Rush. Well, let me tell you something. Three days feel like three hours during Rush. You will be able to go almost anywhere you want. You'll go paintballing, to clubs and billiard halls, on harbor cruises, steak and lobster dinners, and on and on. During all of this you'll have to think seriously about where you will be happiest when all is said and done. That's very difficult to do in the midst of everything that's going on. That's why you should take some time this summer to get a head start. Take this book for example; it's gotta be the same as the 35 other rush books you've received, right? I hope not. This rush book was prepared over several months with the intent of giving you a glimpse of what life at our house is really like. Read the rush books carefully, and you will be able to find differences. I also urge you to take seriously the calls you will be getting from MIT students. They really are trying to get to know you, and gauge your interest in fraternities. Talk to them, and go to the Summer Rush parties if you can. That way you'll find the best place for you when Rush comes along this Fall. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, why should you choose Theta Chi? Well, hopefully that will be answered in the following pages. I can tell you that Theta Chi has been the best part of my life here at school. I'd like to encourage you and your parents to contact me with any questions you have about Theta Chi and life at MIT. I can also put you in touch with some of our parents who have offered their time to talk with you and your parents. So, enjoy your summer and I'll see you in the Fall. Sincerely, |
