/mit/safe/writings The purpose of this directory is to furnish source material to make composing anti-censorship statements easy. As of June 1, 1993, all of the files in this directory were put here by Lars Bader (leb@athena.mit.edu). You are welcome to put your own here. Make a subdirectory with your name if you want. Give the files descriptive names, insofar as is possible while still letting the directory be listed in two-column format. A majority are pieces written by Lars's twin, Hans Bader, a Harvard Law School student who has published numerous letters and op-ed pieces attacking censorship, including letters in Newsweek, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe (twice), Boston Herald (twice), Cambridge Tab, Boston Phoenix, Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the main Houston daily. Most, however, have appeared in college papers. Most pieces regarded "harassment" although one defended an art gallery that depicted Jesse Helms half-naked. Some pieces in the directory were also written by Lars. Some of these were published in the MIT community media -- Counterpoint, Tech, and Thistle. You are encouraged to plagiarize any written materials by Hans Bader or Lars Bader if you feel the situation calls for you to speak out and you don't have time to write your own letter. Most of these points need to be reiterated yearly. In political activism, the point is not to be thought original but to defend your freedoms. The directory contains an opinion piece from an anti-censorship feminist in Forbes, and also an anti-speech code editorial from the Wall Street Journal. The usenet subdirectory contains comments made over Usenet. The directory law contains legal cases and legal commentary that may also be useful to draw upon.
