Excerpts for dissucssion from an article in the 11/17/93 _Daily Illini_ (gopher -p"1/UI/DI/1993/November/17" harpoon.cso.uiuc.edu 70) ================ A caricature portraying two Mexican men on a fraternity T-shirt was found to be constitutionally protected speech at the University of California at Riverside. [...] Maura Whalen, spokesperson for the Individual Rights Foundation, a group concerned with First Amendment issues on college campuses, said her organization offered to legally represent the fraternity after the chapter was ordered to disband for three years. [...] But an out of court settlement was reached when the Individual Rights Foundation filed suit against the university and the issue was changed from one of "behavioral problems of young men" [, the univerity's perspective, -cmk] to a violation of First Amendment rights, Chappell said. [....] The settlement called for the reinstatement of the fraternity and First Amendment sensitivity training for Assistant Vice Chancellor Vincent Del Pizzo and activities director Kevin Ferguson, Whalen said. [...] But the fraternity, as part of the settlement, is required to comply with the sanctions imposed in it by its national headquarters, including writing letters of apology to offended ethnic groups on campus, the other greek organizations on campus and the national headquarters, Chappell said. ================= -- Carl Kadie -- I do not represent any organization; this is just me. = kadie@cs.uiuc.edu = -- Carl Kadie -- I do not represent EFF; this is just me. =kadie@eff.org, kadie@cs.uiuc.edu =
