"The Sex Panic:" Get the Whole Story

For too long the media have presented feminist views on "pornography"
as those of Catherine MacKinnon and Andrea Dwarkin, creating the myth
that support for feminism requires support for suppression of
"pornography".

Where are the feminists who oppose censorship? People like Canadian
sociologist Thelma McCormack, anthropologist Carole Vance, political
humorist Molly Ivins, artists Carol Jacobsen, sexologist Leonor
Tiefer, historian Lisa Duggan, political analyst Ann Lewis, author
Judy Blume? Where are the historically informed, legally
sophisticated, and politically impassioned voices linking women's
freedom and sexual free speech?

There were at _THE SEX PANIC_, a Conference on Women, Censorship and
"Pornography" of the National Coalition Against Censorship on May 7-8
in New York. They were analyzing politics, learning history and law,
being provoked, amused, and moved to find new _feminist_ ways to think
about and fight censorship.

If you missed this invigorating weekend, don't despair. You can read
about it in NCAC's lively REPORT on the conference of its Working
Group on Women, Censorship, and "Pornography.". Just send $5.00 to
"Panic" at NCAC. Co-sponsors were the Women's Center of the CUNY
Graduate Center and the Vera List Center of the New School for Social
Research.
