HE SHARED FANTASY WITH SUSPECT By John Bebow and Dave Farrell 2/17/95 As Jake Baker faces arraignment today for his violent Internet tales, authorities in the United States and Canada continue their search for the mysterious "Arthur Gonda," a person with whom he shared on-line fantasies of rape, torture and murder. Federal authorities said Thursday that electronic mail between Baker and "Gonda," in which the two discuss finding young women to torture and murder, is central to their case. It is unclear whether Gonda would be charged if he is an American citizen. But investigators, who originally identified Gonda as an Ontario man, and even Baker himself, don't know who or where the person is. "We haven't been able to identify him," said Staff Sgt. Bob Matthews with the Ontario Provincial Police. "It's a fictitious name. The only Arthur Gonda we can find is an 80-year-old man who doesn't know anything about computers." Matthews said police are attempting to determine whether any Canadian laws were broken. "We're definitely looking for who that other person is," said U.S. Attorney Kenneth Chadwell. While Gonda and Baker pondered a rendezvous in December, the two never met, said Doug Mullkoff, one of Baker's attorneys. Baker shared all he knew about Gonda with Ontario authorities, said Mullkoff, who added that he didn't know if Gonda told Baker his real name or where he lived. Gonda's e-mail address originates from Intnex Online, a Toronto company that provides Internet access. The company refused to give Ontario investigators background information on Gonda other than what was publically available, said Internex manager Will Rowe. "We realize that we also have (privacy) rights," Rowe said. A trace of Gonda's Internet account indicates that it has not been active since 2 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 6. Baker has remained jailed without bond for a week on charges of transmitting a threat. In briefs to be filed today, his attorneys once again plan to argue that he is not a danger to society and should at least be released on bond. In their electronic correspondence, Baker and Gonda discussed torturing young girls for sexual pleasure. In a separate story, Baker named a fellow University of Michigan student as the victim of a sadistic rape and murder plot. Prosecutors contend that Baker and Gonda's e-mail indicates that they intend to carry out their fantasies. Baker's attorneys said the communication was harmless fiction. On Thursday they pointed to newly discovered messages between Baker and a Virginia man as more evidence of their client's harmlesssness. "I have never hurt anyone, and never plan on hurting anybody," Baker said in the e-mail with the man, who had protested the content of Baker's stories. The fact that Baker and Gonda didnt actually name their intended victims doesn't weaken the case against Baker, said Burt Neuborne, a First Amendment expert and law professor at New York University. "The real question comes down to whether the magistrate in this case believes this guy (Baker) is a threat to the young woman he named in his fantasies or to anyone else, for that matter," he said. "In assessing that risk, the magistrate and prosecutors are free to use whatever information they can gather. They could use his e-mail correspondence, conversations he may have had with other people, even his diary if they have it." Did you get that MAK. I fixed the Maadi. I'm ready to rock and roll. There's this real good machinist who knows how to autoconvert just about anything. -------- For more information about this anonymous posting service, please send mail to remailer@csua.berkeley.edu with Subject: remailer-info.
