The Bible. If the proposed Communications Decency Act is passed and enforced fairly, you could go to jail for putting the Bible on-line. Here is a repost from this newsgroup from two years ago with the details of Biblical in decency. - Carl ============================================== >From caf-talk Caf Jan 9 13:03:13 1994 From: kadie@eff.org (Fwd:) Newsgroups: alt.comp.acad-freedom.news Subject: Re: CICA Removed Fanny Hill (was Re: Censorship of Fanny Hill...) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 6 Jan 1994 09:30:53 GMT I have found more "adult" material in the CICA archive! According to the time stamp the files were placed in the "Miscellaneous Windows Files" area (ftp.cica.indiana.edu:/pub/pc/win3/misc) in November. The CICA file description gives no hint that this literature is "adult" in nature. Here is some of what I found: * A passage about a "whore" whose lovers were hung like donkeys and who ejectulated like horses: "So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister. [...] For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses." * A passage describing a women's public regions and breasts: "Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies. Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins." "This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes. I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples; And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak." * Something about eating "dung" and drinking "piss": "Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?" * Something about a penis being cut off: "He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, ..." There is lots more. Violence, murder, rape, etc. As I'm sure many recognize, these are passages from the Bible. CICA contains several versions of it. I don't think the Bible should be removed from CICA, but I do think that CICA should develop a selection policy based on professional library standards and not on partisan or doctrinal disapproval that would if applied literally exclude the Bible. - Carl ~References: (based in part on an article last year in soc.religion.christian.bible-study by bible@spss.com) Ezekiel 23:18 Song of Songs 7:2, 7:7 Proverbs 5:19 Deuteronomy 23:1 -- Carl Kadie -- I do not represent any organization; this is just me. = kadie@cs.uiuc.edu = -- Carl Kadie -- I do not represent any organization or employer; this is just me. = Email: kadie@cs.uiuc.edu = = URL:
