This is you semi-retired story archiver with a question. For some time now I haven't been able to access my account at WESTMARK.STANFORD.EDU where my archive is. Does anyone know what happened to it? I tried fingering my account there from here but this system said it didn't recognize that name. I can't TELNET there either. (Sorry to waste everyone's time asking here, but I got my account there through a post in the alt.sex groups so I thought I'd try here again.) Thank you. Stanford, which has had enough scandals of its own lately, politely declined to help said sysop, and so it's no more Westmark. I have the story straight from the system operator's mouth. ...Richard -- Beta Testing (v): To voluntarily entrust one's data, one's livelihood and one's sanity to hardware or software intended to destroy all three. Westmark had open FTP access. Someone took advantage of that access to dump illegal pictures into the archive. Someone else found them and reported them. All of the the system administrator was ont aware of until men in dark coats and dark glasses came poking around stanford and opened an investigation on it. The pictures were child porn. If I ever find out who did it I'll happily string them up by their genitals. WESTMARK IS GONE. FOR GOOD. If you lost your archive...well... it's being worked on. I'm not the sys admin so don't mail me about it. Suki -- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Suki<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Bi, switch, tease, but mostly uppity bottom. What you said is true, but what you neglected to meantion was that some %$^^%&%^*@ took advantage of westmark's open ftp access to drop off some illegal gif's. Someone else found them before the sys admin did and reported it to the gov't. The rest is as you said. If I ever learned who the person was who put the illegal pics on westmark I'd happily string them up by their genitals. The Federal Government has a prior history of setting up child-porn busts, by enticing and harassing the "suspect" until s/he relents and takes the bait, then the FBI swoops in and ruins the poor "suspect's" life. While some find it offensive that Federal money is making it possible for me to post this rant, I find it far more offensive that the FBI can tell people what bit patterns they can and can't put on publicly accessible disk drives. Here perhaps only 'making' some pictures (whether it are GIF-converted things or not) sometimes is illegal (only child-pornography, I thought) Illegal gifs, *laugh* Ciao, Remco
