When is that official committee going to say something, and what's going to happen when it does? Three months ago there were all these people hot under the collar, going to rallies and student senate meetings, filling up bboard-censorship and cs.discussion with righteous indignation, but now that creeping CMU apathy seems to have set in. Doesn't anyone care about academic freedom and First Amendment ideals any more? Well, us Hoods members still do, but we have a problem: our Hoods mission is limited to attacking the use of women as a justification for censorship. Right now, we can work on that mission as a group, or we can work on the bigger fight for academic freedom as random individuals. This is inefficient, frustrating, and stupid. But, we have a solution! Here it is. THIS MONDAY (3/13) at 5 pm in the Wean Dining Area, 5th floor, we are calling the first meeting of an umbrella group called CAFE (Coalition for Academic Freedom of Expression - goes nicely with MIT's SAFE, and we all know that every great revolution begins in a cafe). Who can participate in CAFE? Anyone and everyone who doesn't want to see CMU compromise on issues of academic freedom and First Amendment integrity. Undergrads. Grad students. Faculty. Staff. Alumni. Men. Women. Children. Aliens. Bisexuals. Celibates. People who love pornography. People who hate pornography, but love freedom of thought. Getting the idea? What will happen at this meeting? Well, that partly depends on who shows up. CAFE doesn't belong to the Hoods; we're only calling for its formation. Those of us who are loud and active Hoods members will probably be loud and active CAFE members as well, of course, but we are no more in charge than anyone else. We think we have some good ideas to pursue from within CAFE, and we'd like to tell you about them, and to hear your ideas in return. See you Monday! - The Clitoral Hoods ********************************************************************** -- Carl Kadie -- I do not represent EFF or my employer; this is just me. =Email: kadie@eff.org, kadie@cs.uiuc.edu = =URL: , =
