SOLUTION:

Each of the 13 words has a sequence of 3 letters which are adjacent in the alphabet (e.g. abc, bcd, cde) or a backwards version of such a sequence (e.g. cba, dcb, edc). If you take the letter after the forward triplets and the letter before the reverse triplets you'll get:
