Mailing List Detailed Descriptions

mitoc@mit.edu
This list has over 800 subscribers. It is used primarily for official mitoc announcements, but subscribers are also free to post interesting information or comments on it. This takes discretion: You can use it to give a trip report of interest to others, to solicit a ride to the mountains or a hiking partner, to complain about the government's destruction of the remaining wilderness areas and tell everyone how they can take action, but you can NOT use it to pass on a funny joke that's going around on email or to say anything that is offensive, is not related to mitoc-type activities (outdoor / wilderness recreation), or which would be better discussed elsewhere.
mitoc-announce@mit.edu
No one but mitoc officers may post on this list. Thus, it is reserved for trip and activity announcements; if you want to find out about mitoc's official announcements (policy changes, trip announcments, etc...) but don't want lots of email, this is a good choice. Everything that is posted to mitoc-announce is also sent to mitoc. If you want to post something on mitoc-announce, send it to mitoc-owner asking them to post it for you.
mitoc-gear@mit.edu
This list is used to post information about clothing and equipment as would interest the MITOC populace. Send questions or hold discussions about gear, info about bargains and deals that you have found, equipment that you would like to sell, or similar information. Do not send such announcements to mitoc@mit.edu.
climbers@mit.edu
This list is used for trip announcements, finding a partner and other comments that are relevant to people interested in rock and ice climbing.
climbing-wall@mit.edu
This list is used for the new climbing wall located in Walker Memorial. Currently, wall hours for the upcoming weekend are sent out during the second half of each week. Check out the Climbing Wall site for more info.
mitoc-bcski@mit.edu
This list is for back-country and cross-country skiing related posts. This is a new list as of March 2005 so traffic should be low to start with.
mitoc-training@mit.edu
This list is for mountaineering related posts. Planning and coordination of weekly training sessions, special topic seminars/series, trips, and major expeditions are typical topics.
paddle@mit.edu
This list is used for all canoe and kayak related postings. Trip annoucements, river flows, and directions to put in locations are some of the items discussed on this list.
conservation@mit.edu
For discussion of wilderness and evironmental issues. Occasional updates to mitoc@mit.edu are appropriate, but this list was created to reduce the load on mitoc@mit.edu. Extremely low traffic.
