THE CONSTITUTION OF THE MIT MALAYSIAN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION
(Last Amendment incorporated: June 19,2004)

PURPOSE
The MIT Malaysian Students Association (MITMASA) is a solely cultural club with the following
purposes: to foster friendship among students interested in Malaysian culture and to promote cultural exchange between Malaysian students at MIT and students from other countries in Massachusetts. (Top)

MEMBERSHIP
Any member of the MIT community is eligible to become a member of this organization. One is considered a member of this organization in any given academic term if he has paid the club membership fees for the academic year. The membership of this organization will at all times contain at least 5 MIT students and be more than half MIT students. This organization will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement. If this organization charges any monetary dues, there will be exceptions made for students that cannot afford these dues. (Top)

OFFICERS and DUTIES
There shall be 4 to 8 elected officers:

President: To oversee the executive committee and the operation of the Association. He/she
will bear the responsibility of advancing the goals of the Association. The post of President is open to all MIT student members.
Vice-President: To serve as the liaison between the Association and other organizations. In charge of membership information and social events.The post of vice-president is open to all members.
Secretary: Circulates information about the club's activities within the members and other student groups. Also keeps meeting minutes and helps to keep the whole committee informed of each other's responsibilities. The post of secretary is open to all members.
Treasurer: Manages the finances of the Association, especially in obtaining funding and making sure that the Association keeps within its budget. The post of treasurer is open to all MIT student members.
Executive Committee Members: To assist the President in the running of the Association. (Maximum of 4 committee members) The post of executive committee members is opened to all members. Members of the Executive Committee are to decide among themselves the exact division of labor. (Top)

Definition: MIT student members – MIT students who are members only.
All members – Anyone who is a member can be involved (not necessarily MIT students)

MEETINGS
All members of the club shall be allowed to call a meeting. The agenda will be decided on by the President at the time of the meeting. Decisions at the meetings will be carried forth by the Association when a simple majority is reached by the executive committee members for the decision to carry through. In case of a stalemated situation, the President is empowered to cast the deciding vote. When the situation is deemed appropriate, the executive committee can decide to open the voting to members. Meeting shall be held at least once every month. Quorum for a meeting shall be 1/4 of the members of the organization. (Top)

ELECTIONS
Any executive committee member is required to attend at least 50% of the meetings during their term of office. The effectiveness of the meetings during their term of office. The effectiveness of the executive committee member shall be brought into question in case he fails to meet such a requirement. Election of the Malaysian Students Association shall be held at the end of the academic year. Quorum of 50% or ten members, whichever is larger, shall be necessary for an election meeting to take place. The post of President is open to all members who are Malaysian citizens or permanent residents. The other elected posts are open to all members.(Top)

REMOVAL and/or REPLACEMENT of OFFICERS
In the event that an officer should resign, the remaining elected officers will have the responsibility of completing the task of the "dismissed" officer. Furthermore, election of a replacement officer shall be held in the next meeting. Proceedings of this special meeting shall follow the example of an election meeting. If an officer, elected or appointed, does not accomplish his specified duties, he can and shall be removed from his office. But, a 2/3 majority vote of at least 50% of the Association membership at this meeting shall be necessary for the removal of the officer.(Top)

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS
Constitutional amendments require a quorum of 50% of the membership with a simple majority. (Top)

 ASA GOD CLAUSE
The Malaysian Students Association agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
