The Society for Hong Kong-China Affairs (SHKCA) is a student group focused on promoting awareness, interest, and concern regarding the political, social, cultural and economic affairs of Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. Composed of undergraduate and graduate students and alumni, SHKCA works also to promote the advancement of human rights and democracy in China. Our objectives are:

  1. To promote concern, interest and discussion mainly, but not exclusively, among students in Cambridge regarding the social, economic and political affairs of Hong Kong and China.
  2. To provide information and materials related to the social, economic and political developments in Hong Kong and China.
  3. To promote human rights and democracy in Hong Kong and China through rational and non-violent means.

SHKCA was founded in 1989 by a group of MIT students protesting the June 4th Chinese military crackdown on civilian and student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. SHKCA joined forces with other human rights organizations to support the student democracy movement in the Peoples Republic of China. Since then, SHKCA has organized and participated in many events that help advance the cause of human rights through rational and non-violent means.
In addition, SHKCA seeks to provide information and materials related to the social, economic and political developments in East Asia, focusing on Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. Through regular symposiums and discussions, members of SHKCA hope to raise community awareness on important issues in East Asia that are becoming increasingly consequential to America and the world. Possible lecture topics for 2000-2001 include:

  • 1. The US Presidential Election and its effect on US-China-Taiwan relations:
An examination of the foreign policy differences between Bush and Gore
  • Los Alamos Nuclear Secrets: Wen Ho Lee Spy or Racial Profiling?
  • Asian Economic Crisis: Is the worst really over?
  • Information Technology developments in Asia-Pacific region
