Korean History Study - Spring 97
- Feb. 22: We will be studying about MinJoongGaYo, focusing on the ones that reflect the lives of ordinary people, which is excluded in DeaJoongGaYo. We will be listening to songs describing the agony of minority groups, the sociological sense of the minority, in Korea, such as farmers, labers, teenagers and so forth.... By discussing critical relics of each song, hopefully, we will have a better understanding of big portion of the people that our nation is composed of, but have ignored for so long.
- March 1: We will be studying the songs that deal with social problems. Min JoongGaYo is the only culture which introduces such critical issues to the general public with keen insight and vivid representation.
- March 8: We will be studying about the songs that were sung at the demonstrations to establish the firm solidarity between dwmonstrators.
Studying these songs will allow us to open another window in us to see the view that we have been ignoring for so long. We have been exposed to songs that only speak about happiness of life or how angry the character is because his/her girlfriend/ boyfriend abandoned him/her(?). It is true that such issues are familiar to us and generate our sympathy. Therefore, of course, it is a natural thing for us to listen to DeaJoongGaYo, but it will also be important for us to study songs which express greater picture of our society; for we are in the process of emerging to that greater picture.
